In what seemed to me to be a reference to Skyrim or traditional open-world RPG’s in general, the newest Pokémon game, in the long line of titles, was announced today. Pokémon Sword and Shield will be the 8th generation Pokémon title and the first non-spin-off title to be released on a home console rather than a handheld. Considering handheld consoles were what Pokémon was always designed for, the power and portability of the hybrid Nintendo Switch console seems like a perfect fit for this beefier Pokémon title. Fans of Pokémon have been asking for a mainline Pokémon title designed for a home-console for years now, with all the improvements that entail, and that is exactly what fans will be getting with Pokémon Sword and Shield.
The first trailer does a great job at showing those improvements over its handheld siblings. Expansive and more detailed environments are beautiful and look to be a joy to explore, both Pokémon and human characters look more crisp and detailed than ever, and battles have had their effects turned up to overdrive for a more awesome and entertaining show of power. The trailer finishes up with a reveal of the 3 new starter Pokémon introduced in this new entry. They’re quite the adorable bunch as usual! The water-type Sobble is my favorite of the trio, maybe it's my weak spot for Squirtle from the original games showing itself once more.
One major issue veteran fans have had with the newer entries in the Pokémon game series is a lack of difficulty. Let's keep our fingers crossed that Pokémon Sword and Shield packs a punch in the challenge department or at least strikes a better balance than former titles have. Aside from that unknown variable, Pokémon Sword and Shield looks to be the biggest and most beautiful entry to the Pokémon series yet!
What do you think of Pokémon Sword and Shield? Will you be picking the game up when it releases? Will it get you to purchase a Nintendo Switch? Let me know down below!
